Every January 1st, together with our friends and extended family, we gather on Sunset Beach, to catch up, share left-overs, and raise a quiet toast to those no longer with us. Together, we see in the new year.
But no trip to the beach is complete without a long walk along the shore, which provides a perfect canvas for abstract patterns, animal remains, and the ever-present human imprint. Every New Year’s Day, the beach offers up new treasures that invite the viewer to stop for a moment, look, and ponder.
We see patterns shaped by the interplay of animals and waves, of light and shadow. Tracks like streams of hieroglyphs left by shore birds stand out in stark relief one moment, only to be smoothed by the sea into barely discernible marks the next. The camera allows me to capture that elusive moment, and make it permanent.
